No doubt that Hillside can breed and raise a very very good filly!
It is an elite band of broodmares that graze the fertile paddocks at Hillside Thoroughbreds, Nagambie - hand chosen on the basis of superior type and pedigree.
And the results are there for all to see; in just a few years of operation Hillside is proving an outstanding source of quality winners.
Whilst the oldest horses born at the boutique farm are five (sons and daughters of mares purchased in foal), the first born of purely Hillside planning are three - and what an impressive group they are!
Such as the Adelaide carnival bound last start Darren Weir trained Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes winner Tiamo Grace who made her way rapidly through the classes last spring.
And Whispering Brook, the wonderful Western Australian filly who became the first two-year-old since Bomber Bill to make a clean sweep of Perth's juvenile features; winning four stakes races in a row including the Gr.2 Karrakatta Plate and the Gr.3 WA Sires' Produce Stakes. Also proving her worth in the competitive Melbourne spring carnival, Whispering Brook was a gallant third in Global Glamour's Gr.1 1000 Guineas.
Moonee Valley debut winner Areti is another classy Hillside filly and others produced in that crop include the promising Classic Diva and the NZ Oaks nominated Corporate Missile.
No doubt that Hillside can breed and raise a very very good filly!
And then there is the NZ Derby bound Mongolian Wolf who has really looked the goods winning his last two.
Hillside's second totally home-bred crop are also off and running; two runners, two debut city winners!
First there was the exciting two-year-old King's Authority who so impressive racing away to a debut Flemington victory in mid-December.
And then in early February Something Violet (the final foal sired by the late great Commands), who travelled like the winner throughout, was a dominant winner over 1000m at Moonee Valley - the very same race that Areti won last year.
All up Hillside have sold 32 winners of 62 races and over $3.8 million with an average of over $123,000 per winner. 48% of their runners to date (noting that many are lightly raced youngsters) have been winners and they have enjoyed success on the tough Hong Kong circuit as well - House Of Fun (winner of three of his last five for the John Size stable) and Multimax (a five times Shatin winner) both creating a fine impression.
Strong supporters of the Melbourne Premier, Hillside have fared extra well at Oaklands; over four years at the sale providing 28 runners - 16 winners with an outstanding 25% city winners to runners strike rate! Their Premier yearlings have sold at an average of around $85,000 with winners averaging around $145,000.
And the best is still to come with last year's Melbourne Premier graduates in the capable hands of Michael Moroney, Robbie Griffiths, Peter Snowden, Peter Gelagotis and Mick Price.
It's the good judges inspecting and buying Hillside yearlings and they are bound to again be out in force at the 2017 Melbourne Premier with nine outstanding youngsters on offer...
